Speed Run Ocarina of Time and some other Zelda games
"I don't just go out there and run. I like to give people watching something exciting."

Upcoming Schedule:

I will be moving into a new apartment on June 1st. Shortly after that I should have a fairly regular streaming schedule so stay tuned!

Donate to the Brentwood Park Initiative!

Note: I receive NONE of the money if you use the chipin above; it will go directly to the Brentwood Park Initiative. I never touch it. It only lets me track how much my stream has raised. Thank you in advance if you decide to donate!

For more information, you can check out their website here. This is my hometown, and the goal is to build a new park. The park I grew up with was lame, run down, and the track was embarrassing. I run as a hobby and always would go to the next neighborhood over to use their track. I would love to see this park build and become a reality.

A bit about me:

Here are a few awesome sites that I am associated with or view frequently:

ZeldaSpeedRuns

ZeldaSpeedRuns is an awesome site with lots of trick descriptions and videos. It has a great deal of information on Ocarina of Time but the other 3D Zeldas are covered too. It's a great place to go to find out more about some of the glitches or tricks I do on stream in OoT.

SpeedRunsLive

SpeedRunsLive is a cool place to race others and test your skills. You can use an IRC client and follow the FAQ on the site to learn the racing commands. If you are interested in racing definitely check it out and hope to see you in some future OoT races!

SpeedDemosArchive

SpeedDemosArchive is great place to check out if you enjoy speedrunning and a large variety of games. They have a HUGE collection of games, currently over 700! All done as fast as possible. SDA also has several annual charity marathons so be sure to check back often for information on these great events.

What are you playing on? N64? Gamecube? VC? Emulator?

For most runs of OoT I will be on the N64 version, unless it is a segment attempt of a team run (detailed below). Majora's Mask I play on the Virtual Console (VC) Wii version. Other games it typically depends if I have the original cart or if I've downloaded it on VC. If I am playing on VC I use this adapter because I much prefer the N64 controller to the Gamecube one. Sometimes I will also stream on emulator, but this is usually just to test routes or get lots of practice reps in with savestates. For that I have a USB N64 adapter.

How do you stream from your console?

I have a capture card from Hauppauge but you can find cheaper ones. A lot of speedrunners go with an easycap (really cheap, but could have some issues) or a dazzle (like 40-50 bucks and works pretty well). Do some research and find what is best for you if you are looking into streaming.

Wow there are a lot of glitches in this game! Where can I find out how to do these?

Head on over to ZeldaSpeedRuns for more information on the tricks you see.

Why are you playing on the English version? It's slower than Japanese!

Yes, and Japanese is slower than Chinese. Why isn't everyone playing on that? Answer: It's not convenient to get that version. Rather than draw the line at convenience or ease of access, here is how I draw the line: If the category I am playing was created by the English speaking community, then I will use the English version with the English ruleset (timing, resets, etc.). If the category was created by the Japanese players (something like 5 boss without resets or their "no glitch" category), then I would run it on the Japanese version with their timing and ruleset. Additionally, most races are done on the English version.

What counts as 100% in OoT?

This is an old definition from Radix. Not much has changed since then. It should be noted that you do not need the maps or compasses, and you do not need the cow in the house. You also only need the highest upgrade of something (thus, getting gold scale means you don't need silver scale).

What is a bingo race?

A bingo race is something like this.
The idea is at the start of a race everyone gets the same bingo board. The players must then make a "bingo" (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) out of the items on the board. There are several variations of the game: short, normal, long, double (2 bingos), blackout (all 25 squares), and anti (opponent chooses row for you).

This racing stuff sounds fun, how do I join?

First, check out SpeedRunsLive, there is plenty of info there on how to get started and tools to use. Then you simply join the channel (you can do so from the site itself but using an IRC client is preferred if you know how) and can start racing!

What is the 100% Team Run? How does that work?

One cool project the zelda community is doing is a 100% Ocarina of Time Team Run. This is a segmented run that is shared between players. Any one can work on any segment of the run, and the fastest time is then used. This is done on the Wii VC version so that the saves can then be uploaded through SD card and everything will match up. For more information, check out this page. We are currently on Segment 27.

Why stream segmented attempts? That seems really boring...

To be honest I would agree. But I asked if people wanted to see segmented attempts and some people said they did. It can be a bit dull when you are resetting so much but there is nothing more thrilling than being near the end of a successful segment.
