Who are we?
We are Chip Damage. We're a gaming group located at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada specializing in mainly fighting game tournaments. We are closely partnered with the University of Manitoba student group Games on Campus.
What do you do?
We host tournaments for several fighting games every few months. During the summer we run our largest tournament of the year, usually in August. We call it "That Summer Tournament (TST)"
What games do you play?
Currently, the games that receive the largest amount of entries and the highest level of players are Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition and Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
However, we also have audiences for other fighting games such as Tekken, BlazBlue and King of Fighters. If there's a fighting game you like, chances are, someone else here knows about it and plays it as well.
Do I need to be a university student to attend events?
No. That's the beauty of it, all Chip Damage events are open to everyone. You do not need to be a university student nor is there any sore of membership needed to be part of our community.
I'd like to play, but I'm not very skilled with these games.
Not a problem! The Chip Damage community welcome all players of all skill levels. You can be sure to find someone here who is at your skill level no matter how high or low.
If you are willing to learn, we are always willing to teach. Hey, you gotta start somewhere!
Do you play anything other than fighting games?
While there are certainly players who come that enjoy many other types of games, we prefer to avoid hosting events for game genres that already have their own established communities in Winnipeg. If console shooters like Halo and Call of Duty are more your thing, we recommend you check out the guys at All Your Base Online.
Although we may not hold tournaments for anything other than fighting games, we do in-fact play a wide variety of games. Many of us own Xbox 360 / PS3 consoles, and PC.
When is your next event?
Check the Upcoming Events forum for info and updates on the next event.
We often have house gatherings and such on the weekends. If something is going on or if you want to do something yourself, feel free to post in the Gatherings thread.
Streaming Schedule
We are currently working very hard to enable streaming across all of our large events.
The easiest way to know this is to hit that little follow button above the stream window and follow us for e-mail updates that will tell you exactly when we are streaming.
You can also keep an eye our Twitter: http://twitter.com/chipdamage for updates and we will be sure to post when we go live.
As of right now, we have no set streaming times. This is bound to eventually change, but right now, we're just in the testing phase and trying to see where it will best settle in before we make any rash decisions regarding a set schedule.
Just follow us on Twitch.TV and Twitter and you will know the moment we go live, so go ahead and hit that follow button. We'll be waiting here when you get back.
What Programs Do We Use?
Although we are still in the experimental stages of streaming, Dxtory is a must for streaming. This handy recording tool may cost a good chunk of change but worth every penny. No other recording application comes even close to not only the optimization of this program, but also the sheer amount of features and options it gives you for recording your favorite games. If you haven't heard of it or haven't tried it out yet, head over to their website and download the free trial to give it a whirl. http://www.dxtory.com. You won't be disappointed.
Dxtory is only half the equation. The second half comes with actually streaming the content to said streaming site in question. In this case, depending on the game, we will usually use FME(Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder 3.2) or XSplit. Both are great programs with many options you can configure to adjust your stream to suit your needs.
And last but not least, we use a PC with a solid internet connection in conjunction with these programs to create a "complete streaming experience for your viewing pleasure."
For streaming with consoles we usually use PS3 although sometimes XBOX 360 in conjunction with an HDMI splitter and the AVerMedia DarkCrystal HD Capture Pro to record the signal from the console to PC in order to stream online.
